World’s First Floating Offshore Wind Farm Exceeds Expectation

Hywind Scotland, the world’s first floating offshore wind farm, achieved a 65 percent capacity factor in the first three months of operation while battling a hurricane, a powerful winter storm, and waves as high as 27 feet. This surpasses most onshore wind farms--the US’s wind fleet averaged 37 percent capacity factor in 2017--and is compared to 45-60 percent for a fixed bottom offshore wind farm. The 30-megawatt floating farm is located about 15 miles off the Aberdeenshire coast.
