Virginia Shoreline Protection Project to Begin
A shore protection project at the Dam Neck annex at Naval Air Station Oceana is expected to begin in March. Sand from the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf will enhance coastal resilience by protecting shoreline infrastructure. The project will also restore seabird and sea turtle nesting habitat while improving the recreational beach in the community. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management believes this project will help to protect the Naval Base from the threats of erosion and sea level rise. Go to the MarineCadastre.gov data registry to view and download the sand and gravel borrow areas.
