Using Spatial Data and Web Mapping Tools to Support Wind Energy Planning off the North Carolina Coast
Many states are working to be prepared for offshore wind. In North Carolina, a task force gathered stakeholders to compare data and uses and minimize conflicts. Many data sets only existed as static maps which made comparison difficult. By creating a “mashup” of authoritative Marine Cadastre data and local data sets imported into a digital format, data could be easily analyzed using the new interactive webmap. This saved time and energy and proved vital to the process which ultimately resulted in the issuance of a renewable energy lease offshore Kitty Hawk.
