Port of Humboldt Bay Considering Redesign to Support Offshore Wind Energy

While an offshore wind project off the coast of North California doesn’t currently exist, the Board of Commissioners for the Humboldt Bay Harbor is considering hiring an engineering firm to develop a plan for a completely reimagined port. This plan would include a modern, seven-acre dock capable of handling large cargo vessels and assembling offshore wind platforms, turbines, and blades. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has established a 207-square-mile “Call Area” for potential wind energy projects. Having a port to support the construction of any future projects would give the area a major step in the right direction and give a once busy timber port, new life supporting offshore wind.
