BOEM Will Release New Offshore Wind Energy Areas Off the Coast of New York

A chart of draft offshore wind energy areas by BOEM responds to concerns from the maritime and commercial fishing industries in the New York Bight area. The area has a lot of competing uses, all which need to be considered when planning offshore wind energy. BOEM outlined large call areas for the bight and has since updated those areas based on feedback, final wind energy areas are expected to be released in early 2019. They are also requiring all wind developers to use fisheries liaison outreach as part of their planning process. In the end, BOEM has indicated that they do not intend to restrict access to fishers in wind energy areas, and USCG is responsible for maritime safety. Read more about the New York Bight activities.
