New Legislation Aims to Reduce Ship Strikes on Whales
On average, 80 endangered whales are killed each year in California waters. New legislation aims to reduce this number by rewarding shippers that slow down in the Santa Barbara Channel and getting NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuaries to move shipping lanes to decrease interactions. In 2013, shipping lanes were altered as part of a pilot program but that is only a small portion of California waters. Reducing speeds will also help reduce air and noise pollution.
