More Debate Regarding BOEM Plans for Offshore Drilling

It’s a familiar debate: Republicans want more areas open to drilling and more incentives for industries and coastal communities to invest in drilling versus Democrats who warn drilling poses risks to local beaches and the environment. BOEM Director Abigail Hopper testified before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources regarding BOEM’s plan to offer oil and gas lease sales in 2017-2022 and had to balance both sides of the argument. The plan opens an area off the East Coast for drilling while placing waters within 50 miles of the shore off-limits.
