Mapping Recreational Uses of the Ocean in the Mid-Atlantic Region
The ocean seems like a vast expanse with endless space for every type of use. However, many uses must share the same space, such as shipping, tourism, and recreation. Having spatial data on all of these uses helps planners minimize potential conflicts. The Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean worked with NOAA’s National Marine Protected Areas Center and the Marine Cadastre team to hold participatory mapping workshops and gather recreational use data. This data filled critical gaps and the council staff are now trained to hold additional workshops and gather more data.
