First Wind Energy Research Lease in Federal Waters

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has issued its first wind energy research lease in federal waters with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy (DMME). Through this lease, DMME proposes to design, develop, and demonstrate a grid-connected 12 MW offshore wind test facility on the outer continental shelf. This test facility will be built adjacent to the Virginia Wind Energy Area and the data and lessons learned collected will be publicly available and applied to future Virginia projects.
