U.S.’s First Offshore Wind Turbines Installed
So far, the U.S. has 70 gigawatts of wind power and all of it is on land. That all changes this year. Deepwater Wind just installed the first turbines atop the Block Island Wind Farm’s five towers. Construction is expected to wrap up in early September and the 30 megawatt wind farm is expected to be operational in the fall. By 2020, the Department of Energy expects about 10% of U.S. electricity demand will be served by wind, but majority of that will still be onshore.
