First Lease for Offshore Hydrokinetic Technology Issued
The first lease to test marine hydrokinetic technology was issued to Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management leased the site in order for FAU to test offshore Florida for the use of turbines powered by ocean currents. The proposed project involves the installation of multiple anchored floating “test berths” to evaluate ocean current turbine designs. Now that the lease has been executed, FAU may submit a project plan for BOEM’s review.
