Computing America’s Offshore Wind Energy Potential

The Department of Energy and Department of Interior worked together to update the estimate of offshore wind energy potential in the U.S. using new data and advancing offshore wind technologies. It applies technical, environmental, and competing-use exclusions to arrive at what is referred to as the technical resource potential. By combining overall offshore wind resource potential with estimates of how much power each wind turbine can produce and keeping in mind that turbines won’t be added to every inch of the ocean, the result is nearly double the nation’s current electricity use.
