Approval of Shell’s Chukchi Sea Exploration Plan

After a comprehensive review of comments received from the public, stakeholders, and federal and state partner agencies and tribes, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management conditionally approved Shell’s revised multi-year Exploration Plan for the Chukchi Sea. Part of the conditions state that Shell must first obtain all required permits from other state and federal agencies. These include drilling permits from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and all authorizations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Another condition is that Shell must comply with all biological opinions under the Endangered Species Act before drilling.
